Hotel Schweizerhof St. Moritz: Why We Recommend It Alongside the Grand Five-Stars

When clients ask us where to stay in St. Moritz, the conversation usually starts with the famous five-star names: Badrutt's Palace, the Kulm, Suvretta House, the Carlton. They are extraordinary hotels, and we book them often. But the hotel we return to ourselves every winter is a four-star in the middle of the village: the Hotel Schweizerhof St. Moritz. It puts you closest to everything that makes a winter here, from the slopes of Corviglia to the evenings in town, and it is the address we recommend most often alongside the grand hotels.

Why we recommend it

The location

St. Moritz Dorf is compact, and the Schweizerhof sits at its heart. The boutiques of Via Serlas are outside the door, and the Chantarella funicular to the Corviglia ski area is about three minutes away on foot. You walk to the slopes in the morning and to dinner in the evening, without needing a car.

The evenings

The Schweizerhof is one of the few hotels in St. Moritz where the evening comes to you. Its bar street brings three different moods together under one roof. Le Hall, the lobby bar, is for afternoon tea, a cocktail or a cigar in the fumoir. The Stübli is an Engadine-style pub with wooden furnishings where locals and guests share the same tables, and where the night often ends in dancing. The Pianobar pairs live piano with cocktails, champagne and fine wines.

The rooms

The rooms are classic Alpine rather than palatial, and choosing the right category makes the difference. Our advice is to ask for the lake side. The Panorama Deluxe Staz rooms are the largest doubles, at 23 m², with a balcony over Lake St. Moritz and the mountains. The Junior Suites Corvatsch, from 25 to 35 m², also face the lake, and some have a balcony. Families can take the Panorama Family Room Mezdì, which sleeps four and looks out over the lake.

The table

Breakfast and dinner are served in the Segantini dining room, named after its ceiling painting by Gottardo Segantini, son of the painter Giovanni Segantini. Book dinner ahead in high season. Restaurant Acla is the informal alternative, serving all day: homemade pasta, pizza, and bratwurst with rösti.

The hut: Alphütte Clavadatsch

The hotel also has its own mountain hut, the Alphütte Clavadatsch, in a clearing on the Suvretta slopes. Until 1956 it was an Alpine cowshed. Today it is one of the quietest lunch stops in St. Moritz, reached on skis or on foot, just far enough from the pistes to escape the crowds.

Pizza and focaccia come out of a wood-fired oven, the terrace looks over the Engadine lakes, and on cold days lunch is by the fire. Book a table through the hotel, above all in high season.

The value

A night in one of the five-star palaces in high season is among the most expensive in the Alps. The Schweizerhof gives you the same village, the same slopes and the same evenings at a considerably lower rate. That is why it works so well for longer stays, for families, and for groups where not everyone needs a palace.

The grand hotels of St. Moritz, and who each one suits

  • Badrutt's Palace Hotel. On the lake since 1896, and still the social centre of the season. For those who want to be where everything happens.

  • Kulm Hotel. Where Johannes Badrutt's wager with his English summer guests in 1864 started Alpine winter tourism. Historic architecture, sweeping views and modern gastronomy.

  • Suvretta House. Opened in 1912, set apart from the village, with its own ski lift into the Corviglia area and a new spa since the 2026 winter season. For privacy and days on skis.

  • Carlton Hotel. The intimate alternative to the grand hotels, with a smaller number of suites, part of the Tschuggen Collection. For calm and space.

  • Hotel Schweizerhof. For those who want to live the village: the slopes, the shops and the restaurants on foot, and three bars downstairs.

For families and family offices

Many of our clients combine two addresses. The principal stays in a suite at one of the grand hotels, while the rest of the party, the household staff or the security team stay at the Schweizerhof, a few minutes' walk away in the same centre. Everyone is close, the logistics stay simple, and the budget goes where it matters. When the group is larger, a private chalet can be the better answer, and we often arrange both.

When to go: winter 2026/27

  • December: the start of the ski season and the festive weeks, the busiest of the winter.

  • 29 and 30 January 2027: THE ICE St. Moritz, the concours of classic cars on the frozen lake.

  • February: White Turf, the horse races on the frozen lake, held on Sundays.

  • March: long, sunny days and quieter slopes, our favourite month for a relaxed week.

How we plan a stay at the Schweizerhof

We book the room you want, and we build the rest of the stay around it: the flight to Engadin Airport in Samedan, about ten minutes from St. Moritz by car, the transfers, ski instructors, and tables at the best restaurants of the Engadin. For dining, see our guide to the MICHELIN Keys in the Alps. More on our St. Moritz concierge page.
